Luce Scholars Program

The Luce Scholars Program is a nationally competitive fellowship program. It was launched by the Henry Luce Foundation in 1974 to enhance the understanding of Asia among potential leaders in American society. The program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15-18 Luce Scholars each year, and welcomes applications from college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals in a variety of fields who have had limited exposure to Asia.

The program is unique among American-Asian exchanges in that it is intended for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia. Those who already have significant experience in Asia or Asian studies are not eligible for the Luce Scholars Program.

Eligibility

Candidates will be chosen without regard to sex, race, religion, marital status, or need. They must be U.S. citizens, and no more than 29 years of age on July 1st of the year the Scholarship begins. Candidates should have a minimum GPA. of 3.5 for their undergraduate work and must receive their bachelors degree by July 1st of the year the program begins.

Applicants may be graduating seniors, graduate students, alumni, or junior faculty of the nominating university. Candidates may NOT have had significant exposure to Asia through extensive travel or residence, and their academic background and career plans may NOT include a substantial concentration in Asian affairs. Candidates must possess a clearly defined career interest in a specified field. They must show strong motivation and potential for achievement in their field. Candidates must have excellent academic backgrounds and a record of leadership ability either on campus or off. They should possess "more than usual openness to new ideas and a sensitivity to their fellow human beings."
